Safety Measures When Working At Heights

Using the right roof safety systems correctly is recommended when working on a roof. In the construction industry, falls from heights are the leading cause of death. Falls from roofs account for 34% of deaths that happen due to falls. One of the most important things that roofers should think about is safety. There is a reason why guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of roofers. Here are some safety tips and measures every roofer should know.

Wear appropriate clothing and shoes

It is important to wear appropriate clothing that moves with your body while working. You should also wear sensible shoes and clothing. Soft-soled work boots are the best shoes to wear. Shoes that will give you a tight grip on surfaces are good as well. You will want to put on leather gloves to protect your hands for your roof safety.

Utilize safety ropes

If you are working on a roof, you need to use safety harnesses and safety ropes. This way, you will ensure that if you slip, you will not fall off the roof without protection.

Secure ladders

You need to take your time to ensure the ladder you are using is on a level and stable surface. You may want to keep your ladder in place. To do so, use sandbags to weigh them down.

Clean and organize as you go

You should keep your work area clean and neat to ensure you do not slip-on extra nails, trash or tiles. It is easy to clean as you work and ensure the area is organized.

Do not work during wet conditions

Despite using roof safety systems, you should avoid working during wet conditions. Wet conditions and rain can cause the roof to get slippery and create a hazardous environment. Do not risk work in such conditions.
